Homemade Sidewalk Chalk

MATERIALS NEEDED:

1 cardboard toilet paper tube

Waxed paper

Cookie sheet or flat pan to set chalk tube on

Plastic, disposable container (empty whipped topping or butter bowls work great!!)

Plaster of Paris

Liquid tempera paint, your choice of colors

Water

Plastic spoons

INSTRUCTIONS:

Roll a piece of waxed paper to form a tube, place inside the toilet paper tube and spread out so that it fits tight against the inside of the tube, letting wax paper overlap its edges. Set tube upright on another sheet of waxed paper on cookie sheet.

For plaster mixture, combine 1 1/4 cups Plaster of Paris (POP) with 1/2 cup water in plastic container. Mix together until it resembles cake batter (add small amounts of water if too thick or small amounts of POP if too thin) DO NOT DISPOSE OF PLASTER MIXTURE IN SINKS...WILL CLOG DRAINS!!!!

Quickly stir in 2 spoonfuls of tempera paint. Mix until all of plaster is colored. may take a few minutes. Pour mixture into lined tube and tap sides gently to get rid of any air bubbles. Let chalk dry overnight. Remove tube and waxed paper. Place chalk on another piece of waxed paper and let dry for at least 48 hours.
